Wedding Vows

When I first started to think about my vows to you I tried to come up with fancy words that sounded just right. But then I realized that realistic vows that can be kept are more important than how fancy or poetic they sound. So my Love, I have just one promise, one vow, to make to you. Although it may seem simple – only five words with a total of thirteen letters – it is five words with thirteen letters that I can truly live up to.

“I will do my best.”

I will do my best to always love you and to show you that love in my words and my deeds. To always put you first in my heart and in my thoughts. I will do my best to be there for you when you need me, when you need a friend, when you need anyone, to support you, to encourage you, to comfort you, to talk to, to vent to, to laugh with, to cry with or just someone to hold you and be silent.

I will do my best to allow you all the freedom you need to be yourself, to grow and to pursue the things that are of interest and are important to you. To give you time alone, to meditate, to re-group, to calm yourself, to spend time with family and friends or anything you need or want to do on your own. I will do my best to let you be an individual.

I will do my best to do things and to live my life in a way that you can be proud of me and be proud I am your husband and be proud to call me your friend.

I will do my best to always treat you well physically, mentally, spiritually, financially and emotionally. I will do my best to never leave you wanting.

I will do my best to communicate with you. To listen as well as speak. To understand when we disagree. To be fair and to not have expectations that are unreasonable or one-sided.

I will do my best to always do and always be who and what you would like me to be. And at times that I cannot do or be those things, I will do my best to help you to understand why I cannot.

So, while it may not sound like much, it is ultimately all that anyone can truthfully promise and uphold. And so this is my promise – my vow – to you: “I will do my best.”
